Why won't my WebP file open in older software?

WebP arrived in 2010 and took years to reach broad support. Browsers handle it universally now, but plenty of desktop editors, print workflows, older versions of Office and some marketplace upload forms still reject it. Converting to PNG or JPG sidesteps all of that.

Does WebP support transparency?

Yes, WebP has a full alpha channel. If your WebP is transparent, convert to PNG to keep it — converting to JPG will flatten it onto white, because JPG cannot store transparency at all.

Will converting WebP to PNG make the file bigger?

Usually much bigger, and that is expected. WebP is a compressed format and PNG is lossless, so a 200 KB WebP photo can easily become a 2 MB PNG. Convert to PNG when you need compatibility or transparency, not when you are trying to save space.
