NEF to JPG Converter
A Nikon NEF holds everything the sensor recorded, which is why nothing but photo software will open one. This pulls out the full-resolution JPEG your camera already wrote inside the file and converts that — in your browser, with the NEF never leaving your machine.

How to convert a NEF
Straight from a Nikon card to something you can actually send someone.
- 01
Add your NEF files
Drag them in or pick them from disk. These are large files, so a batch of them takes a moment to read — nothing is uploaded while that happens.
- 02
Choose an output format
JPG is preselected because getting a shareable photo out of a NEF is the usual reason to be here. PNG gives a lossless copy of the extracted image, WebP the smallest file.
- 03
Convert and download
The embedded full-size JPEG is lifted out of each NEF and re-encoded to your chosen format. One file downloads on its own; a batch comes back as a ZIP.
Convert another format
Every converter here runs in your browser and needs no account.
- Convert PNGTurn heavy PNG screenshots and exports into JPG, WebP or AVIF without leaving your browser. Batch convert, download as a ZIP, and keep every file on your own machine.
- Convert JPGMove JPG and JPEG photos into PNG, WebP or AVIF in the browser — stop further quality loss, or cut the file size well below the original. Batch convert to a ZIP.
- Convert WebPTurn WebP files into PNG or JPG that older software, print workflows and upload forms will actually accept. Runs in your browser; batches download as a ZIP.
- Convert AVIFTurn AVIF downloads into WebP, PNG or JPG that Photoshop, Office and older phones will open. Transparency is kept, and the batch converts in your browser.
- Convert GIFConvert still GIFs to PNG, JPG or WebP in your browser and escape the 256-colour limit. Batch convert to a ZIP — animated GIFs give you the first frame.
- Convert BMPCut uncompressed BMP scans and Windows exports down to a fraction of their size as WebP, PNG or JPG. A 24-bit bitmap loses nothing going to PNG.
- Convert HEICConvert iPhone HEIC photos to JPG, PNG or WebP in your browser. Batch convert a whole camera roll to a ZIP, with nothing uploaded and no Windows codec to buy.
- Convert CR2Open a Canon CR2 as JPG, PNG or WebP with no Digital Photo Professional. It lifts out the embedded full-size JPEG, so Picture Styles survive. CR3 is not supported.
- Convert ARWSony ARW from an Alpha, ZV or FX body to JPG, PNG or WebP without Imaging Edge. It reads the camera's embedded JPEG, so compressed and uncompressed both work.
Questions about converting NEF
What this tool actually does with a NEF, and where it stops.
Does this develop my NEF's raw sensor data?
- No. Every NEF contains a full-resolution JPEG that your camera rendered the moment you pressed the shutter, and this tool extracts that JPEG and converts it. It is fast, it needs no download, and it gives you exactly the image you saw on the camera's screen. Actual raw development — redoing white balance, recovering highlights, applying your own tone curve — needs desktop software like Lightroom, Capture One or the free darktable. We would rather tell you that than pretend a browser tab is doing it.
Is the result full resolution?
- Yes, for essentially every Nikon body. Nikon embeds a preview at the same pixel dimensions as the raw image, so the JPG you get out matches the photo's full size. If a particular file only carries a small thumbnail, the converter fails that row and says so rather than handing you an upscaled postage stamp.
Why is my NEF so much bigger than the JPG I get back?
- A NEF stores 12 or 14 bits per photosite straight off the sensor, plus the embedded preview and a lot of metadata — commonly 25-50 MB. The extracted JPEG is already compressed for viewing, so it typically lands somewhere between 3 and 10 MB. You are not losing anything the JPEG ever had; the rest of the NEF is raw latitude that only a raw developer can use.
